Pets at the Track
By: Jonathon Summers
Are you thinking about taking your pet to the track? Well in general, this is a bad idea. Racetracks are some of the most dangerous places for a pet. The noise alone is enough to raise the question about if your pet should accompany you.
But nowadays many people travel around the country with their pets. So if you do, here are a few tips to help make it more enjoyable and possibly safer for everyone.
Things to do before you leave:
-
Check with your destination track to be sure if pets are permitted.
-
Consider your pet's sleeping arrangements.
-
Pack first aid items for your pets as well as yourself.
-
Get current on all shots and vaccinations and obtain a Rabies tag for your pet's collar.
-
Get a proper pet license / ID tags (pet's name, your name, address, cell phone number)
-
Temporary tags may be a good idea, including the campsite number.
-
Consider use of a crate for travel and short term restraint.
Things to bring:
-
Bring medications and a copy of prescriptions.
-
Pack plenty of water, food and treats.
-
Bring regular food bowls, food and treats.
-
Bring a collar and leash. Extras are a good idea.
-
Bring their chew toys and dog brush.
Be aware:
-
Be aware of how weather conditions are affecting your pet (heat, cold, rain etc.).
-
Give your pet time to rest.
-
Provide shade for your pet.
-
Keep them on their regular schedule.
-
Make sure your pet is getting enough exercise.
-
Watch that your pet doesn't get tangled around poles or stakes, tables, or trees.
Be courteous and respect the other campers around you.
-
Be courteous of others while walking your dog.
-
Make sure you have complete control over your dog at all times.
-
Do not allow your dog to bark.
-
Closely supervise your pet around children, other visitors and other pets.
-
Never leave your pet outside unattended.
-
Please make use of any designated dog walking areas.
-
Always pick up after your dog.
-
Use zip-lock bags or the plastic wrap a newspaper is often delivered in to pick up after them and properly dispose of it in appropriate trash containers.
