To Camp or not to Camp? That is the question.
By: B. Grimnes
If you have a choice to camp at the track then you should camp at the track! I cannot tell you how much fun it is and we try to do it for every race we go to. The people you meet, and the activities that go on after the main crowd goes back to their hotels are incredible.
Camping at a racetrack is similar to camping at many state parks. Offensive signs, drunkenness and profanity will not be tolerated. Be aware that many tracks do not have water and electric hook-up. They will most likely have public restrooms and possibly public showers. You will more than likely be parking on grass or even dirt, so bring a mat to put down in front of your entrance.
Campfires or ground fires are sometimes restricted. In that case grills are your only option. There may be limitations on if alcohol can be present and certainly it will not be permitted in the paddock area. No smoking around team areas or fueling areas, Duh, and no glass containers.
At many tracks, minors must be accompanied by a parent at all times while in the paddock area. Bikes, roller blades, scooters, skateboards or skates etc. may be banned at tracks. Super soakers, water balloon launchers, spotlights, laser pointers or other items that pose a danger to surrounding guests will most likely be confiscated and not returned. Swimming/wading pools are discouraged or banned as well.
When camping at a racetrack there are more things you need to be mindful of.
-
Be cautious! Be aware at all times.
-
Vehicles always have the right of way.
-
Teams are working. Please respect their space.
-
Make sure your credentials are visible at all times.
-
Be prepared to show ID. The track employees have the right to ask for your ID at anytime.
-
Hearing protection is advised in the paddock.
-
Vehicle Pass must be displayed at all times
-
"Quiet Time" is usually from midnight to 7 am and will be enforced
Often external generators must be shut down during quiet time.
-
Speed limits are also posted and expected to be followed.
-
Be aware and don't block any fire lanes.
-
Reflectors are recommended on all bicycles
-
Activities that disturb the rights of other campers are never tolerated at a racetrack.
-
Interfering with and/or obstructing track officials or security will often result in ejection, forfeiture of tickets and prosecution
-
Usually it is one campsite per household.
-
Make sure you check if pets are allowed. Many of the larger tracks have off-site pet boarding.
If you bring a pet then please clean up after it.
Please just remember, treat your neighbor as you would have them treat you. Then everyone will have a great time!
